the pink shines through

she is 4 now.

she feels it, too. today she let me put cream

on her kitten-scratched face

without wailing and scrubbing it raw.

because she is 4 now.

she has a new weapon

with which she can tackle her large,

sometimes scary world:

she is 4 now.

he’s still the same kid

as a baby, he was curious, quiet, content, and wary of people and new things.

he is still that exact same person.

maybe we wish he were a little more energetic at times, or a little less curious at times,

but not really.

my boy is a teenager now, the time I dreaded most.

not because of the supposed conflicts,

but because it means his time with us,

his time as a child,

is that much closer to the end.

i can see it in his eyes.

“why can’t i be you?”

i did my girl’s 11th birthday shoot at the wildlife sanctuary up the road.

she surprised me with her eleven-ness. was i like that?

so sure, so poised? i think not.

i can see the young lady she will be,

and i like her very, very much.

my love for this girl is boundless.

at champoeg state park.
